A number of communities have created a community network.
This term is somewhat vague but generally encompasses both data network
infrastructure and services (web servers, etc.). A number of the IS
professionals in Galveston felt this was a possibility and explored the idea
further. After meeting to discuss possibilities and creating a white
paper documenting the possibilities and options, the Galveston Community
Network was created.
Infrastructure Goals –
Support high bandwidth requirements (such as video)
between selected sites in Galveston (public, non profit and private)
Support sharing of high bandwidth Internet access off
the island
Infrastructure possibilities –
Everyone link to a commercial provider (such as SWB’s
ATM Cloud service)
Rent/Lease dark fiber between the facilities from a
vendor and run our own network across it
